In their 2018 international open ideas competition Waste, Arch Out Loud called for design submissions for a multi-purpose stadium on the current site of the Olusosun Landfill in Lagos, Nigeria.  Rather than making an object in a landscape, this proposal creates a landscape that holds objects. An incremental housing framework organizes these objects, acting as a datum that collects the radical geometries of the stadium and community pavilions. The stadium, in turn, provides a framework for a climate sensitive community market and acts as the center of a larger neighborhood structure which is home to several resource buildings. Some housing units are provided as part of the initial building project, and the surrounding framework provides structure for continued growth. This allows community members to expand on their own homes as needed while maintaining the organization of a planned neighborhood. This proposal creates an iconic destination for sporting events while also providing a more sustainable model for urban sprawl and community development.
The stadium walls are built as a stepped system of slotted panels. Distance between panels varies along the wall to provide air flow for cooling at the lower levels and shading for spectators on the upper levels. Bioswales and water collection systems have been implemented as a strategy to address both the site’s history of flooding and a more sustainable cooling system for the pavilions. These landscape features provide practical solutions for some site issues as well as create cooled spaces within the resource buildings for community members to find relief from Lagos’ sometimes harsh tropical climate.
